Movie menu entries description:

Settings

This part defines some overall movie characteristics:

Output Filename: specifies the target for the final movie and format. Choose either AVI or RoQ file type to select output format.

Frames per seconds: specifies the movie frame rate, i.e, the number of frames per second. Defaults to 25.

Width: width in pixels of the final movie.

Height: height in pixels of the final movie.

Resize policy: either Expand or Letter box. See below for explanation.

Resize policy

How does QVM manage size differences between source (images or AVI) and final movie?
  • Expand
QVM will always expand/shrink source so as to cover entire final movie size. Aspect ratio is always preserved. The final movie "window" is always centered to the source "window".

Examples:

Since QVM handles expand/shrink operation, you should always keep in mind that:
"The closer the original source size it to the final movie size, the better the result will be."
Imagine that your source is 320x200 pixel and your movie size is 1200x1014, the original source will be expanded and the result will be "pixelized".

  • Letter Box
In this case QVM always make the source movie to appear entirely in the finel movie window. The remain space beside the source movie window is filled with black.
Soundtrack
QVM is able to add sound track to your movie. This window maintains the list of sound files that will be used to generate the whole sound track.
Sounds will be used in the appearance order in the list.
Sound Window

Check the Include soundtrack option if you want to include audio in your movie. If unchecked, no sound will be generated in the movie.

The following buttons help you manage the sound files list:

Add: browse for a sound file by clicking on this  button. QVM supports Wav and MP3 files. QVM does not perform audio compression, so wav files may drastically increase resulting avi file.

Delete: simply delete the selected entry in the list.

Up: move the selected entry up in the list.

Down: move the selected entry down in the list.

Listen to Selection: gives the opportunity to listen to your selection. It uses default system application to play it back.

Truncate if needed: this option indicates if QVM has to truncate the last sound clip to fit the video duration. If not checked and if the last sound clip passes the end of the video stream, video will stop playing back on the last frame and continue playing back the sound clip until its end (Windows Media Player behaviour).

Loop if needed: if checked and if the whole sound track is shorter than the video duration, it makes QVM loop on the sound list until video stream ends.

IMPORTANT: For AVI all files must be characteristic consistent. They all should have the same format (number of channels, bitrate etc etc), otherwise resulting movie may playback weirdly. Upon generation this will be checked and you'll get a warning popup window.
For RoQ format only wav files sampled at 22kHz are supported.

Preview
This allows you to preview what the final movie will look like. A 640x480 window pops up playing back the movie accorcing to all parameters. It is NOT a real-time playback.
You can stop preview playback by just closing the popup window.

Generation

When starting generation with Generate..., this window pops up showing movie generation progression.

If you omitted to specify the output file name, you will be asked to specify it prior to generation.

  • AVI
Before generation actually starts, a system popup window appears to let you select a video codec and configure it.

Sound is generated after video stream.

  • RoQ
Before generation starts, you are asked to set compression settings:

Depending on Quality, generation can be fast (Low Quality) to very long (High Quality). Anyway this RoQ compiler is quite fast compared to others.
The Smoothing option can slightly improve the resulting quality image.
Brightness correction will make movie playback with correct brightness in Quake III Arena.

You can stop generation by pressing Abort button. Note: resulting avi is valid and truncated to the abortion moment.

View Final
This entry just launches the default system application to playback the resulting avi file.
This does not work for RoQ format, unless you have a viewer associated to this format.
